Continuous Quality Improvement- defined:

“ Operations Manager is an approach to quality management that builds upon traditional quality assurance methods by emphasizing the organization and systems: it focuses on “process” rather than the individual; it recognizes both internal and external “customers”; it promotes the need for objective data to analyze and improve processes.”

The Medical Control Authority is Actively Involved in EMS Research!

Pre-hospital research is valuable for two reasons:

  1. It takes a deeper look at what is currently occuring.
  2. It identifies opportunities for system and process improvement.

Below are the details regarding three projects that the MCMCA has been involved in, with all three resulting in published abstracts:

  • L. Bowen BA, B. Kincaid PhD, T. Shields BSN, R. Miljan MS, R. Neumar MD, PhD, R. Swor DO. Determining the Scope of Cardiac Arrest Quality Monitoring Activities of EMS Agencies in Southeast Michigan. Journal of Prehospital Emergency Care. 2015; Vol. 19, Issue 1.
  • L. Bowen MBA, A. Bonfiglio MD, D. Dalbec MD. Transitioning from D2B (Door-to-Balloon) Time Interval Data Collection to R2R (Recognition to Reperfusion) Time Interval Data Collection to Create, Monitor, and Improve a STEMI System of Care in Southeast Michigan. Journal of Prehospital Emergency Care. 2016; Vol. 20, Issue 1.
  • L. Bowen MBA, A. Bonfiglio MD, K. Fink MD. Utility and Efficacy of a State Mandated Naloxone Program for MFR/EMR and BLS Units in an All ALS System Including a Cost-Benefit Analysis. Journal of Prehospital Emergency Care. Planned Publication: 2017; Vol. 21, Issue 1

This is further evidence that the Macomb MCA is focused on the provision of high quality prehospital care.

MCA releases QA/QI Guidance Document to assist Life Support Agencies-

The MCA Medical Director and Operatrions Manager met with every LSA in Macomb County to assess what was being done inside the agency to assess, assure, and improve the quality of care being provided.

All of the information obtained helped the MCA to identify a set of "best practices" regarding how an agency should approach designing, improving, and implementing a quality assurance program.

Below is a link of the final document that was distributed as an MCA Educational Bulletin
